This is a painting by Rene Magritte of a pipe with the words “This is not a pipe” written under it. In reference to cultural studies this implies that the image of the pipe is actually an image of what the pipe signifies. The viewer might associate the pipe with things like upper class, sophistication, or masculinity. Through the process of signification the object or image is no longer just a “pipe”, but it becomes an image of what that “pipe signifies”.
